Age of Empires: Definitive Edition har definitivt ett releasedatum – 20 februari – men till en dels stora förtret släpps spelet bara på Microsoft Store och inte till Steam. Detta är dock inte ett definitivt beslut, enligt Microsofts Jörg Neumann, som hoppas de och Valve kan nå en lösning.

Enligt Neumann beror Microsoft Store-exklusiviteten på att Microsoft ser Xbox Live som spelets plattform. De gör däremot ingen skillnad mellan olika digitala affärer, säger han.

This may be a misunderstanding, the platform is where people play, and people play in the social spaces of Xbox Live, which means that if Xbox Live exists somewhere, we can get a game out there.

Unfortunately, there is no solution to doing this on Steam, but it depends less on us than on other people.

Hade man i dagsläget släppt spelet på både Steam och i Microsoft Store skulle communityt splittras, och det är enligt Neumann viktigt för Microsoft att hålla samman spelarna i en titel med så starkt multiplayer-fokus. De är "totalt emot" att två vänner som köper samma spel via olika digitala affärer inte får chansen att spela tillsammans.
