Förändringens vindar blåser för Xbox Game Pass till Xbox One (och till pc!). Alla Microsoft-utgivna spel – så som Sea of Thieves, och i långa loppet Halo 6 och Gears of War 5 – kommer att finnas för prenumeranter från och med releasen. Ett hårt slag för återförsäljare – eller?
Gamesindustry har talat med oberoende återförsäljare och åsikterna går rejält isär. Franska Seedee Jons Christian Le Cornu tar exempelvis det ganska coolt då Xbox One inte har så många attraktiva exklusiva titlar. Det hade varit värre om Ubisoft gjorde det:
If Microsoft’s games line-up were stronger, if someone big like Ubisoft started doing this, then that would be a cause for concern. I’m not overly worried about it. It’s just a trend, it’s where things are going forward.
Le Cornu konstaterar att det är en trend inom musik, film och tv-serier, så det är naturligt att även spelen följer efter. Games Centres Robert Lindsay håller med om utvecklingen.
Of course it will have an impact on traditional retailers, but digital sales have been steadily eating into physical sales for a long time now. It’s only a matter of time before the publishers turn the screws even tighter and monopolise the direct sale of games. As a retailer, we are always against anything that takes away business, but ultimately consumer buying habits will dictate its success or failure, not retail.
Långt ifrån alla tar det inte med ro. Österrikiska Gameware har slutat sälja Xbox One-konsoler och Stuart Benson på Extreme Gamez gläds med spelarna – men ser sin verksamhets dödsdom.
For the consumer, it's absolutely fantastic.
For us in retail, it just kills us outright.
